Whether your hot tub is brand new or has been in use for years, it needs and requires a good cleaning. All kinds of contaminants can build up in the pipes and on surfaces, like oil grease and concern for Biofilm. It is best to get these things off & out of your hot tub to provide you with the freshest, cleanest water possible on startup.
First, remove your filter - a clean filter goes hand in hand with a clean hot tub. If you have pillows, this is an excellent time to remove and clean them as they can get nasty. Dazzle Filter Cleaning products offer the ease of effectively cleaning your filter, yet gentle enough to ensure that the materials in your filter don’t prematurely break down, which gives value, unlike some filter cleaner brands. Add an entire bottle of Dazzle Drain Prep, or for those of you who have the added benefit of our new Mineraluxe System, one bottle of Mineraluxe Cleanse & Drain.
Turn your jets on high for approx. 5-10 minutes. Over the next 24 hours, turn the jets on high 3 or 4 times. That’s it! After 24 hours, the cleaning process is complete, time to drain your hot tub,
Most hot tubs have a garden hose connection where the system is located, which I call the "dog house."
If you are at the tub side wearing a hat, mitts, and scarf and have a drippy nose, you may wish to speed up the process. If you have a small utility pump, this works well. No men, you do not need Binford Super 3” duo charged pump recommended by Tim Taylor! If you do not have a utility pump, your local hardware store usually rents them for approx. $ 20.00 for ½ day rental or the Pool Place retails small utility pumps for $69.99. The use of a pump is beneficial in draining your hot tub water.
Be careful not to damage the acrylic when you submerge the pump into the hot tub!
After your hot tub has drained, it is an excellent time to use the Dazzle Tub Cleanse to wipe surfaces around your hot tub and behind pillows. Not to worry, this product is compatible with tub water & can be used during the cleaning to remove any bathtub ring off the hot tub surface.
Protect your investment for $25 - Dazzle Cover Cleanse & Protect will protect the cover from the sun & winter elements. Add small amounts to a clean damp cloth & rub them into the vinyl surface. Now finish this fantastic job & clean the Hard Cover.
TIP: if you notice odors coming from inside the cover, a gentle yet amazingly effective product that I highly recommend is NC Clean & Perfect. Spray into the underneath of the cover, let it soak, give it a brush in & rinse - you will find this will address those odors. This product works well in your kitchen & bath as well. If you have a pool & have on hand a bottle of Pool & Patio Cleanse, this works well too.
Rest assured, if there is residual, it will not play havoc with the hot tub water. Spa insulated blankets are also a great investment, especially for older hot tubs that tend to consume more energy. They absorb hot water chemistry and add longer life to your hot tub cover investment.
The use of a wet vac will remove water left in the footwell. Also, go around the jets and remove any water that is left in the lines. That’s it! You're ready to start to fill.
Voila, your spa is now ready for you to enjoy!!
Filling the Hot Tub
Begin filling your hot tub. While filling, add the recommended dosage of Dazzle Stain & Scale 1. This product is formulated for cold water. While the spa is heating, the minerals & metals will be attracted to the heater element, you don’t want it forming scale this could insulate the heater causing loss of temp. If you are on our Mineraluxe System - 2 cubes should be introduced at startup.
TIP: some hot tubs have a bleeder valve at the filter, have this open to prevent an air bubble. Air can get trapped in the line preventing the pumps from turning on. If you find this happens and don’t have a bleeder valve, try cracking open a union slightly (you will hear the air release) tighten the fitting back. Once filled, set the desired temperature.
TIP: most hot tub systems have a winter or freeze mode to protect your hot tub system. Pumps will not turn on until the temperature is above their set freeze protection, usually around 51 degrees. Once the water temperature has reached approximately 65 degrees, take a water sample, elbow depth, and not in front of a jet. Take the guesswork out of balancing and bring the sample to The Pool Place.
Upon startup, if using the Dazzle Botanical System, apply a botanical cleanse, which will provide a bank to prevent organic build-up, then add the oxidizer/shock of your choice. Amaze Plus or Amaze are great products considered non-chlorine, are Ph neutral, and oxidize within 15 min. However, other products depend on your choice of sanitizing. Dazzle also offers Bromine Granules and Stabilized Chlorine Granules.
Salt & pepper over the water. If you are on our Mineraluxe System, open your Oxygen package. Usually, one package is sufficient; however, it applies according to water volume. Whatever your choice, it’s important to remember to leave your hardcover off for a minimum of 15 minutes, allowing for the burn-off of the containments and not causing damage to your hardcover.
Subsequent steps depend on your choice of sanitizer: tablets - being the most convenient or bromine - which is usually the #1 choice for chemistry because it's less finicky. If using tablets, fill your dispenser with the recommended amount of tablets or fill the chamber built into the filter system of newer spas. Those using the Mineraluxe technology will typically notice a 50% reduction in sanitizer consumption after 2 to 3 weeks. This, in turn, drives down the water balance, making hot tub maintenance easy, allowing you to enjoy the hot tub without overloading it with chemicals. Remember to use your test strips and ensure you have 3-5 ppm bromine or chlorine residual.
I hope you find this information informative and find the tips helpful in making your hot tub cleaning easier and allowing you to enjoy the hot tub experience. Remember, however, these tips are general - always refer to your manufacturers' recommendations. If you have any questions or comments, do not hesitate to give me a call or email info@poolplace.ca.
